Portland Timbers should consider upcoming Premier League free agent

We are getting closer to the start of the 2025 MLS season, and the Portland Timbers still haven’t made many official moves.

A few days ago, it was confirmed that the Timbers signed Ariel Lassiter as a free agent after his contract with the Chicago Fire ended, as announced on the club’s official website.

Since then, attention has shifted to the celebrations of the Portland Timbers’ 50th anniversary, and there haven’t been any updates on the transfer market front.

Up next, we’ll talk about a Premier League defender the Timbers should target this summer.

One Premier League player whose contract expires in the summer of 2025 is Tottenham’s 31-year-old defender, Ben Davies.

From our perspective, the Timbers should seriously consider signing him as a free agent.

Although Davies no longer holds an undisputed starting role with Spurs, he has always been a reliable option in their backline.

In fact, with recent injuries to key players like Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero at Tottenham, Davies has once again stepped up and shown that he remains a solid and dependable player.

However, the Welshman has yet to renew his contract, which is why we at Timbers News believe the club should make a move for his signature.

Currently, according to Capology, Davies earns approximately $2.9 million annually. At that salary, he would qualify as a Designated Player, but it’s not unreasonable to think the Providence Park side could accommodate him with a more modest deal.

Who are the Designated Players for the Portland Timbers?

As of the time of writing, and according to the Timbers’ official website, the Designated Players are Evander and Jonathan Rodríguez.

Evander is a 26-year-old Brazilian attacking midfielder, often described as the true star of the Portland Timbers.

Jonathan Rodríguez is a 27-year-old Uruguayan winger who joined the club on March 20, 2024, from Club América in Liga MX.
